Moderator Tip: Pinning Announcements Optimally

Posted almost 2 years ago

The 'Pin this announcement' feature was designed to provide moderators with the ability to highlight and prioritize an announcement over other existing announcements.  In effect, pinning an announcement places it above other, non-pinned announcements, whose order are determined by most recent post date:

Please note however that, since announcements are already listed in chronological order, it may not always be necessary to pin a new announcement.

Why?  Because newly posted announcements are automatically placed at the top of your announcement feed, both on your association's homepage and within the 'News & Announcements' section.

Additionally, pinning too many announcements can lead to an overabundance of pinned announcements listed on your homepage, causing the website visitor to scroll too far down the page (or 'below the fold') to view other important website content.

'Over-pinning' may also cause an imbalance of content on your homepage, when the 'News & Announcements' widget sits along side other widgets, such as Upcoming Events, containing less content.

The takeaway: please do use the pinning feature for reprioritizing older announcements or when you want to highlight an announcement of high importance, but be aware of pinning too many announcements simultaneously.

On a similar note, we have just released the ability to Unpublish (and Republish) an announcement, in the event you would like to archive it within the control panel, and republish the announcement at a future date (at which time, pinning the re-published announcement is the correct tool to reprioritize it and improve its visibility):

As always, please contact us with any questions about this topic or other aspects of your association's website.
